Digambarpur Angikar

Water:

Sundarbans deltaic region is one of the threated area in sweet water scarcity zones. It has been reported that ground water is the only source of drinking water and depletion of ground water is one of the major concern in water development. Digambarpur Angikar continues community managed drinking water program with sinking of bore wells fitted with hand pums and raised platform in disaster prone communities in Sundarban. Beside these, a numbers of  bore well with submersible pumps including overhead tanks, pipeline water supply systems in the remote water scarcity villages and numbers of high schools in South 24  Parganas district, West Bnegal. Formation of water Users Committees (WUCs) and building capacities on Operations & Maintenance (O&M), implements water tariff systems, regular follow-up and monitoring and linkages with local government of WUCs to ensure the sustainability of the people’s managed drinking water programs. 

The organization is creating awareness in schools and communities on use of water, prevention of water brone diseases, not to misuse water, maintaining water collection chains and adoptation of various low-cost technologies  of ground water recharging systems 

Sanitation & Hygiene: 

Working with partnerships of government and other funding agencies on creation of open defecation free villages (ODF), having toilets in each family, schools, anganwadi centers, local youth clubs and community toilets in common places. Creating awareness among community people on importance of using toilets, need to clean toilets everyday, using water properly, etc. 

A numbers of primary Schools, High Schools and Anganwadi centres have been covered under Total Sanitation Program (TSP) by the construction of toilets blocks seperately for both girls and boys including changing rooms for the girls. Each school have been formed WATSAN (WASH committees) with the representatives of girls, boys and teachers in these School WASH committee and organizes many capacity building events, educate personal hygiene practices, etc. and continuing the regular follow-up and monitoring in all supported schools.  

Digambarpur Angikar is an empanelled partner organization of Mission Nirmal Bangla under Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM). During the period of SMB Phase-I & II, The organization constructed household toilets in each households under Six Blocks in South 24 Parganas district and building awareness among women SHGs, youth clubs, schools,  and community people on use of toilets, need to cleans the toilets regularly, not to do open defecation and control of vector brone diseases. Angikar is continuing follow-up and monitoring of all supported families, use of night soils as manure in farming, remodeling of toilets, educate people on water supply in toilets and motivate beneficiaries for the construction of bathing enclosures to maintain better hygiene and dignity of women and adolescent girls. In respect to success this program all supported Six Blocks are now declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) villages, Panchayats and blocks. 

Solid Waste Management: 

Digambarpur Angikar working on promotion of Solid Waste Management in the rural communities in South 24 Parganas and North 24 Parganas districts through household level waste segregation, conversion of biodegradable waste to organic manure for better farming practices.

Being an empanelled Micro Planning Organization with SUDA, Dep’t of Urban Development & Municipal Affairs, Govt of West Bengal, Angikar is involved preparation of DPR on SWM with 24 Municipal Towns in  South 24 Pargans, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas and Purbo Burdwan Districts in West Bnegal followed by impart hand holding training for different level stakeholders to ensure 100% door to door segregated waste collection and effective scientific solid waste management.
